On Wednesday and Friday evenings there is fierce inter-island rivalry from April through to September when the gig racing season gets underway.

The ladies race on a Wednesday and the men on a Friday and boats follow the races with visitors and locals alike cheering their favourite crew which comprises 6 oarsmen/women and a cox.
Scilly has 10 gigs, the oldest of which was built in 1847 and the newest has just been launched. On the first bank holiday in May, Scilly hosts the World Pilot Gig Championships with up to 100 gigs taking part.
