- Piracy flourished in the Middle Ages -112 pirates were beheaded on Tresco in a single day in 1209.
- A Civil War Battle of Tresco was fought in 1651. Kings Charles Castle and Cromwell's Castle are relics of that era.
- Through to the 19th century the islanders relied on smuggling and shipwrecks to supplement their low incomes from farming and fishing.
- In 1834, the Duchy of Cornwall leased the islands of Scilly to an English squire and banker - Augustus Smith.
- Smith brought modern reforms to the islands.
- He also created Tresco Abbey and its Gardens.
- Captain Thomas Algernon Dorrien-Smith succeeded his uncle, and developed the cut-flower industry on Tresco.
- In 1918 his son Major Arthur Dorrien-Smith in turn inherited the island.
- In 1955 his son Lieutenant-Commander Thomas Dorrien-Smith became the owner. And in 1973 his son Robert Dorrien-Smith became, and still is, the owner.
- There is only accommodation for 400 visitors to stay on Tresco.
