- The largest of the Isles of Scilly
- Yet only 2 miles long by 1.75 miles wide
- The administrative centre of the island
- Landing point of year round transport to the mainland Hugh Town is the capital, not much bigger than a village, it sits on a narrow sandbar
- Penzance ferry comes to dock here
- A fleet of inter-island launches to the other islands ply their trade from the quay.
- In total about 9 miles of road wind round the island linking most of the communities.
- Bronze Age man left many tombs and monuments here, including a megalithic village.
- Strangely too, there are Civil War fortifications - hostility between the factions ran to the corners of Britain
